Baby Terms Tuesday: Mastitus

What is Mastitis?

Well, if you are lucky enough to avoid this horrendous condition throughout your breastfeeding career then count your lucky stars woman! Because it is a killer! Literally. It can kill you. But only if left seriously untreated. Which would be near impossible to do because the symptoms are comparable to the worst flu and Gastro you’ve ever  had, put together, x10. The pain in your boob is also excruciating. (And you have to massage it out, Ouch!) I am not kidding when I say I would rather give birth to my daughter five times than have mastitis again. AVOID MASTITIS. Medically speaking, Mastitis is the result of a blocked milk duct that hasn’t  cleared. This causes pain and inflammation in your boobie. Mastitis can also be caused by bacterial infection. Other symptoms if left untreated are, flu like aches and pains, raised temperature, lethargy, headaches, vomiting and diarrhea. To be honest you will just feel like absolute death. The fun part is, treatment of the lump includes rubbing and massaging to clear the duct and continued breast feeding. Both of these are completely essential to recovery and also the very last thing in the world you want to be doing. Also you will most likely need antibiotics to fight the bacterial infection! So there you have it, Mastitis is a completely, nasty, horrible, mole. So rest up, load up on those antibiotics and hope that bub isn’t to upset by them passing through your milk.
