Baby Terms Tuesday: The Wonder Weeks

A wonder week is described as a period of fussiness during which bub is clingier, crankier, cries more and sleeps less.

These periods are related to developmental leaps forward. This neurological development means that bub now has many more possibilities to learn about his or her world. Understandably this has a huge impact on bubs, How exhausting! The entire perspective he or she had of the world completely changes within a day and your baby simply doesn’t know how to deal with all of these new possibilities and the new perspective she now has of the world!

So in other words, Wonder weeks are GOOD NEWS! it means that your little bundle is growing, learning and developing mentally and physically! The only thing that is likely to help is lots of cuddles with mum lots of boobie (or bottle) and quiet time.

For some babies it will be really obvious when these leaps are occurring however for others, not so much. Here is a list of when in your babies first few years these leaps should approximately occur.

Mental leap 1 – Wonder Week 5 (can occur as early as week 4)

Mental Leap 2 – Wonder Week 8

Mental Leap 3 – Wonder Week 12 (between 11 and 12 weeks)

Mental Leap 4 – Wonder Week 19 (from 18 – 20 weeks)

Mental Leap 5 – Wonder Week 26

Mental Leap 6 – Wonder Week 37 (as early as 35 weeks)

Mental Leap 7 – Wonder Week 46

Mental Leap 8 – Wonder Week 55

Mental Leap 9 – Wonder Week 64 (between 63 – 65 weeks)

Mental Leap 10 – Wonder Week 75

Of course, I am a firm believer in all babies being different and developing at different rates. The Wonder weeks is a really helpful guide to fall back on when bub is upset for no apparent reason or when you have noticed some exciting changes!
